Meta’s vision “Threads” are not for breaking news & world events, But a Big more
The latest news about Meta’s Twitter is, that the company is not interested to use its platform just to put on breaking news, world events, and angry tweets only. It has a lot more to do, Threads app is designed for friendly social gatherings, daily gossip, chit-chat, sports activities. Above all that should be in a soft tone, in short, a neutral place to sign up or log in and connect.
Description given now for Threads is the same that was given for Facebook. That it is a large, welcoming, unbiased platform where people can “connect”. This concept took us to fantasies that this platform is just for men and women. To attract and to make love and to get closer, like love birds from all around the world. However, despite claiming to be neutral, Facebook has consistently encouraged specific types of content and behavior, pushing its users further into the world that reinforces their existing beliefs. This practice creates polarization and extremism that greatly impacts today’s global politics.
Mosseri (Former head of Facebook’s News Feed and currently Instagram head, currently active Threads representative) replies to Alex Health from The Verge’s, shows that they learn from the wrong lessons;
Applications are designed for business, it never the case that efforts wasted for the apps that gives no return. Instagram and Threads are the best-designed apps with strong algorithms that get intact regular users with brands, promoting commercial interactions at every opportunity. Apps cannot be solely meant for business and trade only. Throughout history, desirably or undesirably apps have also been crucial hubs of culture and platforms for political discussions and these cannot be avoided.

In July 2023, Meta released Threads, a text-based social networking app. However, this app is not yet launched in Europe. This is primarily due to regulatory ambiguity and worries over data protection.
European Union proposed a new law called the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which is expected to get into effect in 2024. This law is to regulate large online platforms to create a fair and competitive digital market. The DMA confined the major tech companies to use data gathered from a different provider to target customers for one of their services. By this compulsion, the key function of Meta, the ability to link Threads accounts to Instagram accounts, may become challenging.
Furthermore, the DMA mandates large digital businesses to acquire user consent before collecting and utilizing certain types of data. This might make it more challenging for Meta to obtain the user location and contact data that it needs to power Threads. Regulations in Europe empower users to control their personal information while making it harder for businesses to gather and use data without their consent.
Meta already has data privacy problems like the data breach scandal with Cambridge Analytica, which costs them $725m (£600m) to settle. Regulators in Europe are now wary of the corporation and its methods for collecting data as a result. Because of this, Meta might wait to introduce Threads in Europe until it is certain that it can abide by the local data privacy rules.
